Incidents/Safety News here or elsewhere:

Two orchard workers died in tractor rollovers almost exactly a month apart at one Yakima farm. Rollover protection could have saved both lives, but wasn't used. Now the fruit grower has been fined nearly $300,000.  L&I is citing Borton & Sons for five willful serious violations for the two incidents, citing them for the failure to use ROPS and seat belts, and for changing the scene of the June 8 accident before the inspection began.

When deep frying anything, know that water or ice contacting hot oil will cause an explosive reaction as seen in the following video.  Always completely defrost and pat dry anything that is to be deep fried. Account for displacement of oil by amount of food added.  Watch the following video and reply with a thumbs up or something to confirm attendance, please and thankyou.

Ladder Safety

True story, a little exaggerated but...  Last week, out of sheer bad habit I stepped off the 3rd rung of a 5 foot ladder.  I always skip the last rung on my little step stool, so this ingrained bad habit literally knocked me on my arse. It could have been much worse. Lesson learned.

Always practice proper use of all ladders; don't let yourself or others get into bad habits even if they seem innocuous.

Cement Pouring Company Policy

Safety Meeting 09252023

Agenda: Cement Pouring Company Policy

Review of last meeting approved: Yes

Corrections: --

Unfinished business from last meeting: --

Cement is a hazardous substance before it is set.  We do not use cement, so our company policy on residential job sites is to avoid contact with cement while it’s being poured.  Do not begin a job if a pour is in progress. Leave the jobsite if/when cement workers begin a pour on that job site.  Please read the following on the hazards to cement workers to better understand why our company policy is the way it is. A Spanish version is also available at the link below.

URGENT EARLY SAFETY MEETING: 08112023

Last Meeting Unfinished business: --

Announcements: --

New Safety Subject: Heat Warning Issued/Heat Related Illnesses

We have a high pressure system headed our way with temperatures starting to rise this Saturday and continuing through at least Thursday.  I've heard everything from the high 90's to 109° from various forecasts.  Regardless, the overnight temperatures will not drop very low so it will be hard to get any relief from the heat.  Two weather discussions are linked below, one for Portland, OR and the other for WA state.

https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=PQR&issuedby=PQR&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1

https://a.atmos.washington.edu/data/disc_report.html

Remember to stay hydrated and replace electrolytes. A good quality sports drink that is fairly natural and includes a little calcium is 'Tactical' by Fluid. It can be found on Amazon (no affiliation) but I'm not sure where else. Remember to drink water to sports drink in a 1:1 ratio, but eating healthy foods is the best electrolyte replacement.

Start early, finish early, do attic or roof work first if possible, take breaks as needed in an air-conditioned space if possible and keep an eye on each other for symptoms of heat related illnesses. There is a possibility that the boss may pull everyone off the jobs because the heat poses a hazard that cannot be adequately mitigated, so keep your phones handy.

AQI 08102023

AQI 20; good and forecast to remain good for the day.

Wednesday, August 9, 2023

Please see this link for Safety Meeting 08072023:

When finished reading respond with a thumbs up or "read" to confirm attendance.  As always if there are any questions or comments, you may direct them to the contact info listed here or feel welcome to reply to this blog.  Thank you, be safe, and have a great week! ☺

AQI: 25 and forecast to remain good today.
