Please watch this super basic and short video on avoiding heat related illnesses: https://youtu.be/Kr2ouLj1oW0?si=W0UV4SlGbOCWiSPs

I find it interesting that in all the years I've been doing safety meetings, I have never found anything on OSHA or WISHA about the importance of replacing electrolytes. Maybe I'll write an email and see if they start to mention electrolytes.

Anyway, when you sweat heavily, have vomiting or diarrhea, electrolytes such as  sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonates are lost.  These need replacing regularly with a healthy diet.  Sports drinks can be helpful at a 1:1 ratio of water to sports drink, but eating whole, nutritious foods is the best thing you can do for yourself. Eat the rainbow, and I'm not talking about Skittles.

  • Take breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces often.
  • Drink water and/or sports drinks.
  • Eat healthy meals and snacks--don't fear the salt shaker in hot weather.
  • Stay self-aware, monitor how you are feeling.
  • Watch your co-workers for signs of heat related illnesses.
Next week we will cover more on this subject.
